All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey will not play Thursday night when the Carolina Panthers host the Atlanta Falcons, according to multiple reports.
Earlier this week, the Panthers designated their star runner to return from injured reserve. However, he was not officially activated prior to Thursday's deadline.
McCaffrey has been sidelined since Week 2 with a high ankle sprain and the team initially said he could return in 4-6 weeks.
McCaffrey, 24, who racked up more than 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in 2019, ran for 156 yards and four touchdowns and caught seven passes for 67 yards in Carolina's first two games.
The No. 8 overall draft pick in 2017, McCaffrey has gained 5,666 yards from scrimmage and scored 43 touchdowns in 50 career games.
The Panthers (3-4) are 16th in the NFL in total offense but 27th in scoring touchdowns in the red zone.
McCaffrey's return to action is likely to come next week when the Panthers travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs on Nov. 8.
Mike Davis, who has rushed for 284 yards and two touchdowns, will again be the team's main back against the Falcons. Davis struggled in Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints, gaining just 12 yards on seven carries.
Also, the Panthers promoted guard Mike Horton, defensive back Natrell Jamerson and receiver Marken Michel to the 53-man roster on Thursday. The trio replaces three players on the COVID-19 list: cornerback Rasul Douglas and offensive linemen Michael Schofield and Tyler Larsen.
