HANOI, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam recorded 8,624 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, including 8,620 locally transmitted and four imported, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
The new infections brought the total tally to 145,686, with 1,306 deaths, the ministry said.
Among the community cases, 4,180 were reported in the southern epicenter Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), 2,075 in the nearby southern Binh Duong province, and 544 in the southern Long An province.
As many as 38,734 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered, up 3,250 from Friday, while 5.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered nationwide, according to the ministry.
As of Saturday, Vietnam has registered a total of 143,447 domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, including 141,877 detected since the start of the latest outbreak in late April, the ministry said.
In a circular issued on Saturday, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered 19 southern localities including HCMC and Binh Duong province to extend the application of the strictest social distancing measures applied by two more weeks, after the current restrictions expire on Sunday.
