HANOI, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 16,838 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, including 16,763 locally transmitted and 75 imported, according to its Ministry of Health.
The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the locality with highest number of infections on Tuesday with 2,935 cases, followed by northern Hai Phong city with 1,139 cases and central Da Nang city with 943 cases.
The infections brought the country's total tally to 2,062,128 with 35,972 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 1,756,154 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered.
Some 170.1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 72.7 million second shots and 18.8 million third shots, have been administered, according to the ministry.
Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Tuesday, the country has registered over 2 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year, the ministry said.
