The Dallas Stars are acquiring Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes and are signing the forward to an eight-year, $96 million contract extension, TSN reported on Friday.
Per ESPN, the Hurricanes will receive two first- and two third-round picks as well as forward Logan Stankoven in the deal.
Rantanen's time in Carolina was relatively short, as he was acquired by the Hurricanes in a three-team deal with the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 24.
Carolina acquired Rantanen and former Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall from Chicago and sent forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury to Colorado in that trade.
Also in the deal, the Avalanche acquired forward Nils Juntorp, a second-round draft pick in 2025 and a fourth-round pick in 2026. Juntorp was then traded to the Hurricanes, while the Blackhawks received their own 2025 third-round pick, which had previously been dealt to Carolina.
Rantanen, 28, had six points (two goals, four assists) in 13 games with Carolina after recording 64 points (25 goals, 39 assists) in 49 games with the Avalanche prior to the deal. He is playing in the final season of a six-year, $55.5 million contract.
The 10th overall pick by Colorado in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Rantanen eclipsed the 100-point mark in each of the previous two seasons and helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022. Over his career, Rantanen has compiled 687 points (289 goals, 398 assists) in 632 games.
Stankoven, 22, had 29 points (nine goals, 20 assists) in 59 games for the Stars this season.
