VIENTIANE, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered flash floods and landslides across several parts of Laos, leaving one people dead and several others missing, and causing significant damage to homes and agricultural land.
According to the local news website Lao Phattana News report on Thursday, continuous heavy rainfall from July 2 to 7 triggered flash floods and landslides in Vientiane province. Five villages were affected, impacting 179 families. The total estimated damage is around 422 million Lao kip (some 20,000 U.S. dollars).
In Luang Prabang province, severe flooding occurred on July 6 following several hours of continuous rain. The floods caused extensive damage to homes and left some people missing. As of the morning of July 8, the body of one male victim had been recovered, and search and rescue efforts remain ongoing.
Meanwhile, in Khammuan province, heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding on July 8, submerging roads and homes. The flood disrupted traffic for several hours, damaged numerous houses, and swept away livestock and personal belongings.
In addition, the Mekong River Commission (MRC) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall expected between July 9 and 11 across northern and central Laos. Authorities are urging residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant and follow official safety guidelines.
