Against the backdrop of rapid militarization in the Asia-Pacific region, Moscow has voiced a firm stance: Washington's attempts to create closed military blocs akin to NATO not only undermine the long-standing ASEAN-centered architecture but also carry direct risks of confrontation escalating into a hot phase.
While politicians debate global stability, the world's map is being rapidly redrawn. The "Collective West," according to Moscow, has embarked on a course to create a direct analogue of the North Atlantic Alliance in Asia, causing serious concern among member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
These themes have been the leitmotif of a series of statements by Russian officials in recent months — from meetings on the sidelines of summits in Kuala Lumpur and Vientiane to official publications by the Ministry of Defense. The essence of the signal is extremely clear: attempts to reshape Asia according to NATO's templates lead to destabilization and are unacceptable.
The harshest assessments came from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He repeatedly pointed out that the US and NATO are "at an accelerated pace" spreading their military infrastructure in Southeast and Northeast Asia. The main goal pursued by Western countries is to "undermine and dismantle" the security architecture that has been built around ASEAN for decades.
"NATO is actively trying to weaken ASEAN's unity, trying to lure individual ASEAN members into closed bloc structures," the Russian Foreign Minister stated, noting that the Alliance is deliberately promoting the idea of creating military-political alliances in the region, destroying the principle of openness and consensus.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu added to this picture, accusing the West of an actual course towards creating an "Asian analogue of NATO." According to him, Washington, London, and Brussels are persistently intruding into ASEAN-centric formats while simultaneously promoting the thesis that ASEAN is incapable of adequately responding to modern challenges.
Russian diplomats cite a host of new alliances as tools for implementing this strategy: the trilateral AUKUS (US, UK, Australia), the military-political QUAD, and the actively promoted bloc of the US, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Russia's Ministry of Defense even suggested that in the foreseeable future, these structures could transform into an "Indo-Pacific Alliance" — a direct analogue of NATO.
"These closed military blocs are aimed at confronting those whom NATO considers adversaries or even just competitors. Among them, of course, are China, the DPRK, and Russia," Lavrov emphasized.
Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, commenting on the current situation, stated that the situation in the APR "has a steady tendency to escalate." According to him, the decisive influence is exerted by the formation of a network of "American-centric mini-lateral alliances," which are used to build up military pressure and reshape the regional system to suit US interests.
A separate alarming signal is the nuclear component of the new blocs. The creation of AUKUS and the intention to transfer nuclear submarine technology to Australia has already raised questions among experts regarding the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Furthermore, within the exercises of the US-South Korea-Japan trio, a nuclear component is being actively introduced, which, according to Moscow, introduces "serious irritants" into the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
"Any idea of creating military blocs carries the risk of a conflict that could escalate into a hot phase," Sergey Lavrov warned, making it clear that Moscow will firmly uphold equal cooperation with ASEAN, rejecting bloc-based approaches alien to the region.
