The New York Yankees put right-hander Marcus Stroman (left knee inflammation) on the 15-day injured list on Saturday ahead of their home game against the San Francisco Giants.
Stroman, 33, underwent X-rays and further tests Friday after he recorded just two outs in the Yankees' 9-1 loss to San Francisco. Stroman (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs, four hits and three walks. He has an 11.57 ERA in three starts covering 9 1/3 innings this season.
Stroman signed a two-year, $37 million contract with the Yankees before the 2024 season.
After a solid first half of the campaign, he struggled in the second half, prompting a move to the bullpen in September. He did not appear in the postseason for the Yankees, who lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
Stroman finished the regular season with a 10-9 record and a 4.31 ERA.
After Friday's loss to San Francisco, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he thinks Stroman, an 11-year veteran, still has what it takes to be a viable starter in the major leagues.
'I do, because I think the movement qualities are there,' Boone said, per MLB.com. 'Again, (he has) less margin for error, and there's probably some adjustments we can all make with him that hopefully allow him to go out there and be effective. Because the stuff is not much different than the first half of last season, to the second half to now. So we've just got to execute a little better.'
Stroman joins Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt on the injured list for the Yankees. Cole is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, while Gil (lat strain) is on the 60-day IL. Schmidt (shoulder) is expected to return during the Yankees' series against the Kansas City Royals next week, according to MLB.com.
To take Stroman's place on the roster, the Yankees called up right-hander Allan Winans from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
Winans, 29, spent time with the Atlanta Braves in 2023 and 2024, posting a 7.20 ERA in eight starts (40 innings). He surrendered one unearned run in 2 2/3 innings for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.
