BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. Chengdu celebrates one-month countdown to 2025 World Games
With one month until the opening of the 12th World Games on August 7, Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, is entering the final stages of preparation for the premier global event for non-Olympic sports.
According to organizers, all 27 competition venues are finished and undergoing final inspections. 18 are existing facilities, while nine were temporarily constructed in parks and lakeside areas to keep costs down.
Nearly 10,000 volunteers have been recruited for the Games, supported by more than 500 urban service stations to assist athletes and visitors.
For the first time in World Games history, a torch relay will be held on July 26. The relay will pass through Chengdu, Deyang and Meishan, covering 11 kilometers and featuring 120 torchbearers. The route includes landmarks such as the Jinsha Site Museum and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
2. Rising star Zhang selected in China's roster for FIBA Women's Asia Cup
Basketball prodigy Zhang Ziyu is set to make her international debut in a senior major tournament, as China announced its 12-player roster for the FIBA Women's Asia Cup on July 12.
Standing 2.26 meters tall, Zhang starred at last year's FIBA U18 Women's Asia Cup with an average of 35 points and 12.8 rebounds, helping China advance to the final and being awarded the MVP of the tournament.
The 18-year-old is joined by Han Xu, MVP of the previous Women's Asia Cup in 2023, on the center position.
China is placed in Group A along with South Korea, New Zealand and Indonesia, and will kick off its title defense against Indonesia on Sunday.
3. China draws with S. Korea in women's East Asian Cup opener
China's women's football team played out a 2-2 draw with host South Korea in the opening match of the 2025 EAFF E-1 Football Championship, also known as the East Asian Cup, on June 9.
China opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Yao Wei struck from distance, but South Korea equalized in first-half stoppage time.
In the 67th minute, Yao turned provider, heading the ball to Shao Ziqin, who nodded home to restore China's lead. But deep into stoppage time, Ji So-yun salvaged a dramatic draw for the hosts with a long-range strike.
In the men's competition, China lost 3-0 to South Korea on July 7.
4. China puts rookies to test at World Universiade in Germany
China unveiled its 220-member delegation for the 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany on Tuesday, with most of the athletes set to make their debuts at the global university student gala.
The 120 athletes will compete in 14 sports across more than 90 disciplines. However, the team will not participate in wheelchair basketball - making its debut as an official Universiade sport - nor in fencing, water polo, or rowing.
Among the standout athletes are 24-year-old Liang Yushuai, the men's 68kg taekwondo bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and 21-year-old Shu Heng, who won the men's long jump gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in May.
China's squad is four times bigger than that of the Universiade's previous edition, held in Chengdu in 2023. The 2025 squad has an average age of 21.9, with athletes ranging from 18 to 25 years old.
5. Yang scores 10 points for Blazers in NBA Summer League
Chinese center Yang Hansen scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out five assists to help the Portland Trail Blazers claim a 106-73 victory over the Golden State Warriors in an NBA summer league game on July 11.
Selected as the 16th pick in last month's NBA Draft, 2.18-meter Yang also recorded three blocks and one steal, while committing three turnovers and six fouls in 23 minutes and 35 seconds of play.
