The Los Angeles Dodgers traded right-hander Dustin May to the Boston in exchange for two of the Red Sox's top outfield prospects, both teams confirmed.
In a separate move, the Dodgers obtained outfielder Alex Call from the Washington Nationals in exchange for pitching prospects Eriq Swan and Sean Paul Linan, per multiple reports.
The Red Sox got May, a pending free agent who can both start and work out of the bullpen, by trading James Tibbs III (Boston's No. 5 prospect) and Zach Ehrhard (No. 27).
May, 27, is 6-7 this season with a 4.85 ERA, 43 walks and 97 strikeouts in a career-best 104 innings over 19 games (18 starts) after missing all of last season.
He has a career record of 18-16 with a 3.71 ERA, 100 walks and 271 strikeouts in 295 2/3 innings over 65 regular-season games (52 starts). He went 1-0 with a 4.22 ERA, six walks and 13 strikeouts in seven postseason games (three starts) as the Dodgers won the World Series in 2020.
The Dodgers selected May in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He has dealt with multiple health issues coming into this season. In April, he made his first start since May 2023. He had Tommy John surgery, then missed additional time following an incident in which he tore his esophagus while swallowing food.
Tibbs, 22, was batting a combined .232 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs in 87 games for Boston's Double-A and High-A affiliates this season.
San Francisco selected Tibbs 13th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Florida State and sent him to Boston in the Rafael Devers trade in June.
Ehrhard, 22, was picked by Boston in the fourth round of the 2024 draft out of Oklahoma State. He batted a combined .267 with nine homers and 45 RBIs in 89 games for Boston's Double-A and High-A affiliates.
Call, 30, was batting .274 with three home runs and 26 RBIs in 72 games for the Nationals this season. He is a career .242 hitter with 19 homers and 91 RBIs in 277 games for the Cleveland Guardians (2022) and Nationals (2022-25).
Swan, 23, was a Dodgers fourth-round draft pick in 2023 out of Middle Tennessee State. He was 4-3 with a 4.43 ERA, 46 walks and 77 strikeouts in 69 innings over 16 games (14 starts) with High-A Great Lakes.
Linan, 20, a native of Colombia, was a combined 3-3 with one save, a 2.78 ERA, 31 walks and 101 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings over 18 games (14 starts) for Dodgers' affiliates at Class A, High-A and Triple-A.
